His Halfway House Orch; Johnnie Saba, vocal<br \/>\n(Columbia 1959 D mx 147658)\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 December 17, 1928<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-938-2\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Albert-Brunies-His-Halfway-House-Orch-Just-Pretending.mp3?_=2\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Albert-Brunies-His-Halfway-House-Orch-Just-Pretending.mp3\">https:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Albert-Brunies-His-Halfway-House-Orch-Just-Pretending.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here are a couple of enjoyable recordings from a record in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/2024\/01\/10\/update-edward-mitchell-78-rpm-collection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Mitchell collection<\/a> by a jazz band that was popular in the New Orleans area throughout most of the 1920s.\u00a0 These were made during one of Columbia&#8217;s regular field trips to that city and were recorded in the old <span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hnoc.org\/virtual\/goods-every-description\/godchauxs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Godchaux Building<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The band was based out of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.old-new-orleans.com\/NO_Halfway_House.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halfway House<\/a>, a dance hall that took its name from the fact that it was located approximately halfway between New Orleans and Lake Pontchartrain.<\/p>\n<p>There are several other recordings by this band in Radio Dismuke&#8217;s playlist and they all have a similar jazzy but laid-back style.\u00a0 The recordings here are from the band&#8217;s last recording session &#8211; though Albert Brunies did record again years later during the LP era.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vjm.biz\/new_page_19.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At this link<\/a> you will find a detailed article about the band, Albert Brunies, the other musicians in his family and the Halfway House.\u00a0 Note: the article indicates that the Halfway House is still standing, which it was when the article was published.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the building was subsequently demolished in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
