Ross Gorman<\/a>, whose recordings were consistently more jazz-oriented than the wider-ranging repertoire of Whiteman’s flagship band.\u00a0 By the time this recording was made, Victor’s association with Gorman and Whiteman had ended, and The Virginians had become a recording pseudonym for Victor’s in-house band, which, in this instance, was directed by Nat Shilkret.<\/p>\nIt wasn’t until I got this record into brighter light to make a scan of its label that I noticed the label on the Coon-Sanders side had, at one time, featured an inscription in white ink.\u00a0 Most of that ink has long since rubbed off. But under the right lighting, one can see a remaining outline of a portion of it.\u00a0 The only part that I can make out for sure says “To George.”\u00a0 Below it is a section where one can make out what might be a very faint capital “J.”<\/p>\n
At the time, it was common for fans to ask musicians to autograph copies of their 78 rpm records, and it was customary for such autographs to be in white ink.\u00a0 So there’s a good possibility that this copy was once autographed by someone associated with making the record.\u00a0 On the other hand, especially given that the record became available in stores during December, it is also possible that the inscription was to note a Christmas present.<\/p>\n
