{"id":145,"date":"2019-06-06T22:51:29","date_gmt":"2019-06-07T03:51:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/?p=145"},"modified":"2019-06-06T22:51:29","modified_gmt":"2019-06-07T03:51:29","slug":"jack-payne-and-his-bbc-dance-orchestra-1931","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/2019\/06\/06\/jack-payne-and-his-bbc-dance-orchestra-1931\/","title":{"rendered":"Jack Payne And His BBC Dance Orchestra &#8211; 1931"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-142\" src=\"http:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ColumbiaCB318.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ColumbiaCB318.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ColumbiaCB318-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/ColumbiaCB318-300x300.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Love For Sale&#8221;<br \/>\nJack Payne And His BBC Dance Orchestra<br \/>\nJune 27, 1931\u00a0 \u00a0(Columbia CB 318 mx CA 11779)<\/p>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-145-1\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Jack-Payne-And-His-BBC-Dance-Orchestra-Love-For-Sale.mp3?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Jack-Payne-And-His-BBC-Dance-Orchestra-Love-For-Sale.mp3\">http:\/\/www.early1900s.org\/notes\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Jack-Payne-And-His-BBC-Dance-Orchestra-Love-For-Sale.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Here is an instrumental recording of a Cole Porter song that, today, is regarded as a &#8220;standard&#8221; but whose lyrics were regarded as so risque and controversial when it debuted in 1930 that they were banned from radio air play in both the United States and Great Britain.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Love For Sale&#8221; debuted in the Broadway musical production <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibdb.com\/broadway-production\/the-new-yorkers-11281\"><em>The New Yorkers<\/em><\/a> and describes prostitution from the perspective of a prostitute.\u00a0 The critical response was so harsh that the show&#8217;s producers replaced the original performer, Kathryn Crawford, with <a href=\"https:\/\/aaregistry.org\/story\/she-could-do-it-all-elisabeth-welch\/\">Elisabeth Welch <\/a>on the premise that white audiences and critics would be less offended if the role of the prostitute was performed by a black actress.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nycitycenter.org\/About\/Blog\/2017\/love-for-sale\/\">At this link<\/a> you can read Elisabeth Welch&#8217;s account of how she came into the part and watch an amazing video of her performing the song&#8217;s full lyrics 50 years later at the age of 76.<\/p>\n<p>In Great Britain the lyrics were banned from play on the BBC.\u00a0 I am not sure if there was a formal ban of them being performed on records.\u00a0 But there might as well have been as the closest thing to a vocal version by a British band I could find was Al Bowlly performing with the Roy Fox band in which Bowlly quietly scatted &#8220;la-la la&#8221; sounds instead of words.\u00a0 The other British recordings of the song besides the Jack Payne version featured here included the Eddie Grossbart,\u00a0 Howard Goodfrey, Nat Star and Jack Hylton bands- and all of them are listed as instrumentals.<\/p>\n<p>In the United States, however, several vocal recordings were issued, the most famous of which was by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Libby_Holman\">Libby Holman<\/a>.\u00a0 Fred Waring&#8217;s Pennsylvanians made a recording with a vocal by the Three Waring Girls\u00a0 &#8211; which was appropriate as the Waring band appeared in the original Broadway production.\u00a0 Fred Rich&#8217;s band also made a recording with a vocal by Bill Cody.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the controversy surrounding the song&#8217;s lyrics, Cole Porter was quoted as saying: &#8220;I can\u2019t understand it.
